Dougie Lampkin wins his fifth Scottish Six Days Trial.
The name Lampkin has been synonymous in Scottish Six Days Trial folklore for fifty two years. Dougie Lampkin is fifth member of the Silsden family again climbing the steps to motor cycle sport glory and his start to finish domination of the 2009 event has been nothing short of sensational.
A member of the family has won the trial no less than ten times and a Lampkin has mounted those famous stairs on Saturday an amazing thirty times. Arthur, Alan, Martin, or his son Dougie, have received the magnificent North British Rubber Company Trophy.
On Saturday though the wheels of fortune, or rather the rear wheel of his Beta-UK machine relinquished its hold on the rear tyre, in the second section at Lower Mammore. Only supreme fitness and strength of the rider managed to salvage two precious marks to get the machine out of the section. Lampkin’s lead over challenger Alexz Wigg shrank to just five penalties but the latter lost a single mark where Lampkin suffered his problems.
The scores were now twelve and eighteen. With just four sections to ride, and win, on Ben Nevis, Lampkin failed the twenty seventh section, His lead was just one mark over Wigg so the last three sections were now into a real cliff-hanger ending, but his nerves held firm.
