As the 6DAYS® FIM Enduro of Nations fast approaches on 12-17 October, it is almost time for Nieve Holmes to put on her national jersey and represent Great Britain in the MOTOREX Women’s World Trophy competition for the seventh time.
Never one to take her selection for granted, Holmes will arrive in Grândola, Portugal, determined and motivated to prove herself like always. The Sherco rider will be joined by Rosie Rowett (RIEJU) and rookie Lucy Barker (KTM).
A rider with proven pedigree, Holmes helped Great Britain secure their debut MOTOREX Women’s World Trophy victory in 2022 and has since gone on to win two national enduro titles, while also finishing third overall in the FIM Women’s Enduro World Championship. Excited for this year’s 6DAYS, she is counting down the days until she rolls off the start line.
“Putting on the British jersey is always a really special moment for me,” says Holmes. “It brings a huge sense of pride and gratitude, knowing that I’m representing my country. Having done so six times for Team GB is something I never take for granted, and being trusted with the honour of team captain makes wearing the jersey even more meaningful.”
To win the single biggest enduro race on the FIM calendar is something few riders ever accomplish, so for Holmes, ticking that box was a moment in history she will never forget.
“Winning the Women’s World Trophy in 2022 was honestly one of the biggest highlights of my career,” she recalls fondly. “To win it for the first time ever was incredibly special, but having the boys also win the World Trophy that year made it even more amazing.
“Standing on the podium in front of so many people, flying the British colours from the top step, and seeing so many Union Jacks in the crowd was really special."
With six 6DAYS events under her belt, Holmes can see the level of competition grow each year. Racing for a place on the podium or inside the top five continues to get harder, which she sees as a good thing for enduro.
“I definitely think the Women’s World Trophy class is heading in the right direction. The level of competition gets stronger every year. It’s great to see more and more talented female riders coming through and competing at the highest level from a wider variety of countries.
“I also feel that we’re being given equal opportunities to compete and showcase what we can do, which is really important for the growth of women’s enduro. The more exposure and support the women’s class gets, the more competitive it will become. There’s always room to keep developing and improving, but I think the progress we’re seeing is really positive - it’s exciting to be part of that.”
One contributing aspect was the introduction of the MOTOREX Women’s Club Team Awards in 2024. Creating additional avenues for women to race the 6DAYS is welcomed by Holmes.
“Yes, it’s been a really positive move for the sport. It gives more women the opportunity to race the 6DAYS, learn, have fun and gain valuable experience without the added pressure that comes with competing in the Trophy class.
“I think it’s a great stepping stone towards the Trophy class and, hopefully, encourages more women to get involved in enduro. Instead of only having three women represent each country in the Trophy team, this opens the door for many more female riders to compete, gain experience and develop. Over time, that can only help grow the number and depth of women riders coming through.”
