Manx Radio Podcasts

As a fledgling radio station in 1964 one of Manx Radio’s early Outside Broadcasts was in the south of the Island on Thursday 9th July for the Southern 100 Road Races.

Since that initial broadcast 56 years ago, the Nation’s Station has rarely missed live coverage of the annual races except for the foot and mouth crisis in 2001 and of course this year with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Earlier this year, Southern 100 Racing had, with the co-operation of Managing Director, Chris Sully and Programme Controller Alex Brindley been in the process of commencing a regular Podcast Programme, however this had to be postponed once the emergency laws came into play.

With no races this year, our Broadcast Partner set up a Southern 100 Podcast facility and made available a selection of Race Commentaries from 1964, 1995, 2006 & 2019 during what would have been Southern 100 Race Week and became Southern 100 Virtual Race Week.

Listeners could relive and breathe in the unique atmosphere of ‘the friendly races’, as commentators Jack Quayle, Geoff Cannell, Maurice Mawdsley, Tim Glover and Roy Moore describe the action in their own inimitable ways as the races unfold – all spine tingling and memory evoking sounds!

Also the pleasure brought to many loyal Southern 100 supporters to hear again the voices of very highly regarded Commentators no longer with us.

The broadcasts were and still are available on Manxradio.com; Apple; Google and Spotify. Southern 100 Racing are now resuming their plans to commence regular podcast programmes soon.

As race organisers Southern 100 Racing are very appreciative of Manx Radio’s co-operation in locating and making available the race commentaries under exceptional circumstances which have affected everyone since March this year along with their continued encouragement with the Podcast Programmes.

We also look forward to our partnership continuing for the foreseeable future.
