RIP LEW COFFIN

Tuesday February 3, 2015 at 4:28pm
It is with great regret that the ACU have to announce the sad news of the passing of Lew Coffin, at the age of 93.

Lew started racing in 1945 and was known as the King of West Country Grass Track. He had a magic ability to defy his age and won his 8thSouthern Centre Championship in 1967. Lew dabbled in Speedway at Bristol and Exeter in 1948.

Although Lew did not win a National Championship he did finish 3rd in 1956, 1958 and 1959. He became heavily involved in training school and discovered many top line riders.

Lew was sensational on the continental 1000 meter tracks and defeated the top German riders in his debut in 1958. Lew maintained his links with continental promoters who became his friends and many young riders made their international debuts as one of ‘Lew’s boys’.

Even during last year he was a familiar sight at many grass track meetings and will be sadly missed both at home and abroad.

Our deepest sympathies go to all Lew’s family and friends at this moment in time

Details of the funeral will be published once known
