Great Days Racing with Bemsee at Silverstone

Wednesday May 14, 2014 at 4:09pm

Former Bemsee front runner and British Superstock 600 rider Tommy Philp returned to his old stomping ground for the third round of the British Motorcycle Racing Club's season, taking all four wins in the Team Respro MRO 600s on the Silverstone International circuit.

Philp disappeared at the front in each race, leaving the rest to fight it out for the remaining podium places.

After impressing in his rookie year last year, where he claimed the rookie championship and showed his speed in the competitive MRO series, James Puttrell put in a string of impressive performances at Silverstone. The Yamaha R6 mounted Puttrell took all four second placed finishes, but claimed 100 points Clubman championship tally, too.

The results didn't come easy however, with Ben Gallaway and Chris Beck, also Clubman riders, taking a third placed finish apiece in Saturday's races. The pair took a second place finish each in the Clubman class.

Michael Smith, the former DFDS Seaways Yamaha Past Masters champion and EDIasia Formula 400 front runner, threw his hat into the ring on Sunday, taking third place overall behind Puttrell in race one, before Ben Gallaway returned to the podium with third in race two, also finishing second Clubman behind Puttrell.

Finding his feet in the MRO 600s is also reigning Minitwin champion Luke Harris, the youngster riding a Kawasaki ZX-6R. After a difficult start to the season Harris has impressed with his improving performances and attitude to learning to ride the 600. As a reward for his efforts, he was awarded the Bob Winter trophy, Bemsee's Silverstone Saturday award.

Originally awarded to fastest sidecar outfit back in the 1950s, the trophy's new category is to the rider who impressed most on Saturday. With a brace of seventh placed finishes and ever improving lap times, and two wins in the Thunderbike class, Harris was presented with the award on Saturday night.

He said, "I was so overwhelmed to be awarded the Bob Winter trophy on Silverstone Saturday, it's a special award and to receive it is something I will cherish for a long time. I also couldn't do any of this without my team and people like Oliver Fooks, Steve Jordan, the guys at ePayMe.

"Every time I put my leg over the 600 I improve and improve. My aim is to continue with the hard work and give it my all and keep progressing."

The BMCRC Rookie 600s were also in action, with Stephen Draper putting himself into title contention with three wins and a second, his second placed finish coming in the final race on Sunday, when he was pipped to the flag by Grant Newstead by less than a tenth of a second.

A full grid of F1 and F2 sidecars were in action over the weekend, with three different outfits on the top of the podium in RKB-F1 sponsored series.

After qualifying on pole, Tim Reeves and Gregory Cluze took the win in race one with Tony Brown and Ashley Hawes second and Peter Founds and Sander Faber third. Reeves and Wilkes were the leading F2 outfit in second.

Brown and Hawes then took the win in race two from Founds and Faber, with Reeves and Cluze failing to finish, while Sean Reeves and Mark Wilkes were again the leading F2 pairing, crossing the line in third.

Sunday's action saw Founds and Faber do the double, with Reeves and Wilkes completing their clean-sweep in the F2 class, taking two wins, with a second and a fifth overall. Martin Kirk and Paul McArdle completed the podium in race one and were second F1 home, with Mick Bleackley and Ben Ransley second in the final race, with Kirk and McArdle third.

Matthew Truelove dominated the third round of the MRO Minitwin series at Silverstone, taking all four wins on his Kawasaki ER6, the first time since the Minitwin class’s inception at Bemsee that an ER6 has taken a win.

Truelove made a relatively slow start to the season, before getting on to the podium for the first time at Snetterton, but has now launched himself into title contention with Silverstone's results.

Truelove qualified on pole by just eight hundreds of a second, and followed that up with a victory over his brother Harry Truelove, the gap at the line just three tenths of a second, with Kurtis Butler in third.

Matthew Truelove was on the top step again in race two, ahead of Butler and Joe Buxton, with Harry Truelove dropping from podium contention on the last lap.

On Sunday, Truelove took his third win ahead of Buxton, with Grant Robertson, who spent the weekend getting quicker and quicker, on the podium for the first time this round in third. Truelove then completed his perfect weekend, bettering Buxton and Butler in race four.

In the Rookie Minitwins, Ben Body kept himself at the top of the championship standings, taking three wins and a second, with Stuart Hill taking victory in race two.

Mason Williams, who arrived second in the championship after taking his first wins at Snetterton, was unfortunate to score a DNF in race one, but recovered to take three podiums, with a third and two seconds.

In the Steve Jordan and ELP Racing sponsored BMCRC Thunderbikes and Thunderbike Extreme, Ben Gallaway took all four wins, with Jason Byard second each time, the pair a one-two in the Extreme class. Dave Shelvey took third in race one, before Paul Willis stood on the podium in the remaining three races.

Luke Harris took two wins in the Thunderbike class on Saturday, with Steve Palmer and Joe Buxton sharing the spoils on Sunday.

Barry Chapman and Steve Murphy took two wins apiece in the Morello Services MRO Powerbikes, with Murphy closing in at the top of the championship standings after a DNF for Chapman in Sunday’s opener.

Michael Honey and Roger Marsh took two wins each in the Clubman class, while Gordon Macintyre took the first win in the Rookie class, before Jack Croucher won the remaining three, moving to the top of the Rookie championship.

Extending his perfect start to the season in the DFDS Seaways Yamaha Past Masters was Graham Higlett, who took al four wins at Silverstone, while James Sharpe took three wins in the Clubman class, the other going to John Walker. Sacha Gyte and Michael Stanley took two wins each in the Rookie class.

In the National Junior Cup Joel Marklund and Mark Piper took a win apiece, with Ryan Folkes doing the double on Sunday. Richard Hunt and Steve Jordan shared the wins in the Senior 300s.

Dean Stimpson was once again in dominant form in the Freshdrop BMZRC 250 series, taking all four wins, elevating himself to the top of the championship standings despite missing the opening round.

Full grids in the EDIasia Formula 400s saw Richie Welsh, Steve Palmer and Andy Saunders go at it hammer and tongs over the weekend. Returning champion Palmer took the win in race one, with Saunders on the top step in race two.

On Sunday, Italian Francesco Cavalli took the win in race one, after a high speed crash involving Welsh and Palmer and Saunders at turn one. Battered and bruised, they returned for the final race, with Saunders salvaging second, behind Cavalli, who took his second victory. Martin Potts took all four wins in the rookie class.

For added nostalgia, in the Bonhams Lansdowne British Historic Championship, Mike Edwards took a brace of wins on Saturday, with Michael Russell and Duncan Fitchett taking a win each on Sunday. Mark Reeves took all four wins in the Two-Stroke GP series, also in action over the weekend.
