The third round of this year’s British F2 Sidecar Championship heads to Cadwell Park on Sunday 4th and Monday 5th May. This is the first of two visits to Cadwell this year and in fact, in the championship’s 30 years history, Cadwell has been used for more races than any other circuit. Both Mallory and Cadwell have been used in 24 of the 30 years, but Cadwell has held 44 races to Mallory’s 42.
For the last 6 years, the winners of the second sidecar race here have been awarded the Andy Brown/John Dowling Trophy, awarded in memory of Andy and John, popular competitors who lost their lives in the 2003 Southern 100. They first figured in the British championship in 1999, finishing 14th. There was no F2 Cup then; otherwise they would have been likely winners. 10th in 2000, 18th the following year and 10th again in 2002. They were in 8th position at the time of the accident in 2003. That year had also seen them achieve their best TT placings, with 10th in both races.
After that Southern 100, Cath and Alan (Andy’s Mum and Dad) received money from various collections and fund-raising activities, and so decided to set up a fund which in turn could feed the cash back into the sport which Andy and John were so passionate about. This year is the last time the trophy will be awarded, as agreed ten years ago by family and friends. Cath and Alan, and Bill Dowling would like to thank all concerned and wish everyone an enjoyable race.
