This Sunday the third round of the Maxxis ACU British Motocross Championships takes place at the Cadders Hill circuit in Lyng. Following a five week break in the calendar the championship returns to action at the sandy Norfolk circuit, which is sure to produce some fantastic racing.
Round two of the Championship at Canada Heights saw the unfortunate loss of Arnuad Tonus due to a heavy crash on the opening lap of the first race resulting in a dislocated shoulder and broken scaphoid which will see the reigning Champion miss the meeting. With his team mate out injured it is Mel Pocock on-board the Monster Energy Bike It Yamaha who heads the points after taking over the Red Plate at the Canada Heights event. This is where Pocock was in great form taking a superb fourth place in the opening race following a first turn crash along with a second and third place finish in the other two motos.
Trailing Pocock by ten points down in second place is the South African Neville Bradshaw on the Evo-Tech Stevens Honda, Bradshaw currently sits in second following a string of consistent results over the first two meetings of the season and will be looking to build upon this as the championship moves to Lyng. Local hero Elliott Banks Browne will be looking to repeat his great result from round two where he took his first ever British Championship race wins and the overall victory. The Lyng circuit is the home event for the Bury St Edmunds youngster who will be looking to claw back some points on Championship leader Pocock following a disappointing DNF at the opening round.
Lyng will see the return of Graeme Irwin who failed to score points at Canada Heights after being involved in the first race crash with Tonus and suffering concussion. Other riders to look out for in the MX2 class will be Nicolas Aubin, who took a race win at Canada Heights, along with Steven Lenoir who currently sits in fifth place ahead of Bryan MacKenzie in sixth.
At the top of the MX1 standings it is still Kevin Strijbos on the HM Plant KTM UK machine who holds the Red Plate after his clean sweep at round one, while Canada Heights featured three different race winners. STR KTM’s Matiss Karro took the overall victory at Canada Heights by virtue of a better last race result over Stephen Sword on the Tyco by TAS Suzuki and now sits second in the points standing.
Shaun Simpson currently sits in third place in the standings on the Monster Energy Bike It Yamaha and he will be looking to build upon his race victory at Canada Heights along with some strong showings at the recent World Championship events. Stephen Sword currently holds fourth in the standing and will be looking to improve on his close second overall at Canada Heights as he becomes more settled on-board the Suzuki.
Other riders to watch out for in the MX1 class will be Gert Krestinov on the Route 77 MVR-D Honda who currently lies in fifth place, along the Kawasaki pairing of Martin Barr (Maxxis Henderson LPE Kawasaki) and Marc De Reuver (Lanes Kawasaki) who took his first race victory of the season at Canada Heights along with local interest being focussed on former Grand Prix rider and Multi British Champion Carl Nunn, who will be supported by local Car Supermarket Stebbings on a stock KTM.
The Cadders Hill circuit will also play host to the second round of the British MXY2 Championship. James Harrison on the Lanes Kawasaki currently leads the way following a 6th place finish in the opening moto and race win second time out. Harrison currently leads Robert Davidson by four points after the first round, with Dan Thornhill a further point back in third place.
The MXY2 class is sure to produce some exciting racing as a number of riders try to close the gap on the early Series leader. Oakleaf Kawasaki’s Tommy Alba took a race win at round one but a DNF in the second moto saw him drop to eighth in the standings. Other riders to look out for will be Robert Muscat, Ben Watson, Chris Bayliss and Ben Howell.
Sunday’s action starts at 9am with Practice and the first of eight Championship races starting at 12:15pm. For more information please visit the Official Maxxis ACU British Motocross Championship website on www.MXGB.co.uk.
