No one knows better than twelve-time Trial World Champion Dougie Lampkin about how important home support is when it comes to the British TrialGP. Although he has now taken on the role of Course Director for TrialGP Anglesey – which will take place from Friday 24 to Sunday 26 July at the Trac Mon Circuit, Anglesey – Dougie remains very vocal about the role that British fans can play in giving the home riders an advantage when they go up against the World’s best.
“Home support always makes a difference. I was lucky enough to experience that many times throughout my career, and the support from British fans always gave you that little bit extra. More than fifteen British riders will be taking on the World’s best at TrialGP Anglesey this July. If you can make it, get yourselves there and get behind them. It’s a fantastic venue, the sections will be incredible, and overall it looks set to be a brilliant weekend of motorcycle sport in general.”
Dougie took his maiden World victory on home soil, in front of a passionate crowd at Houghton Tower in 1994, and he still remembers that moment clearly. “The noise when I came out of the final section was amazing, and the support I had all day gave me a boost. Getting your first win and being able to share it with the British fans was very special.”
Lampkin achieved eleven of his ninety-nine TrialGP victories on home turf and would love to see the current crop of British riders repeat that feat. “Having at least one British rider on top of the podium at Anglesey would be the cherry on the cake and would make it a weekend to remember for the fans. There is a great chance of this happening in all the classes, and as Harry (Hemingway) showed at Leeds earlier in the year, if he brings his A-game he could create history and become the first British rider in the top class to win since I last did in 2006. Who would dare miss that?”
