ACU British Sidecar Cross Championship Update

Following a successful meeting on Tuesday 7th March between the ACU Motocross Committee and Interested Parties, the ACU Motocross Committee is pleased to give the following update relating to the 2023 British Sidecar Cross Championship.

The British Championship is currently in a difficult situation with a lack of potential organisers due to the increasing trend of Sidecar Crews entering events at the last minute. This creates uncertainty and impacts upon the financial viability of any club or organiser running a round as it becomes too much of a risk which results in rounds being cancelled.

The ACU currently have potential 4 rounds with three rounds confirmed, at Wakes Colne (16th April), Dean Moor (2nd July) and Schoolhouse MX (27th August) and we are hopeful following initial discussions that this can be increased to 4 with all events avoiding World Championship dates.

For the British Championship to continue it is a crucial that crews must enter the first event by the closing date and there needs to be 20+ crews as this is absolutely vital in securing future rounds.

The biggest stumbling block the ACU is coming across from an organisers point, is riders don’t enter or leave it extremely late.

During the meeting some changes were made to the regulations which is hoped will help encourage riders to compete in the series, and to make the events more cost effective for everyone.

For 2023

  • There is no registration fee and entry fee will remain the same as in 2022, even though organisers cost has increased this year.
  • Prize money to remain.
  • There will only be free practice instead of timed practice.
  • Gates positions by 2022 championship positions for the first round, non-points scorers to ballot, then as per championship positions for remaining rounds.
  • No Sighting laps
  • It is important that everyone gets behind this championship and competes in it, if not the future for a British Sidecar Championship could be in jeopardy. We are all working as hard as we can to save, maintain and indeed improve this series. Ultimately its now down to you the Crews to support this and guarantee the future of the Championship.
