Mother Nature did her best to upset the running of the Springspeed Nationals over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend. With three qualifying sessions scheduled for Saturday and three sessions on Sunday. Saturday turned out to be the best day of the meeting with four sessions. Rain stopped the qualifying sessions in the afternoon on Sunday. Monday the track crew did a huge job to dry the track and just before 4.00pm racing started, before the track curfew two hours later.
Funny Bike
Allan Davies continued his improved performance and was the number one qualifier 7.280-178.96 of a small field. Dave Peters was next with 7.362-176.83. Phil Crossley was the last qualifier 7.471-166.74.
Due to the rain delaying the start on race day, only the first round was completed in all classes. Davies on a bye run, staged and broke the beam. Peters was a no show so Crossley did a solo pass of 7.786.
Comp Bike
In the final qualifying session Eddy Smiley turned the wick up and grabbed the number one qualifier spot with 8.136-169.18. Mick Winyard was the number one qualifier after day one of qualifying 8.211-176.77 and dropped to number two. Dave Thomas was number three 8.222-174.65. Pro Stock Bike rider Ian Burns had an air leak and made his only run in the final session 8.438-140. Top Fuel Bike rider Rene Van Den Berg rode the ex Herman Van Driel Pro Stock Bike to a best of 9.162.
All the competitors who qualified left before the track was dry.
