FIM Flat Track Cup heads to Leicester this weekend
On Saturday at the Jordan Road Surfacing Stadium there is racing with a difference as the venue is the stage for a FIM Flat Track Cup, Gold Trophy Championship event. Leicester Stadium has been selected by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) to host the UK Round of this competition, which breaks new ground as it is a first occasion the competition has been staged in this country. Afterwards the series moves on to Slovakia in July followed by two rounds in the Czech Republic with the final and sixth meeting in Italy during October. Last season’s competition ended with a gold medal for Vesprini Fabrizio of Italy who finished top of the leader-board, just four points ahead of Tom Woolley who rides speedway for the Buxton Hitman in the National League.

The first staging of the 2013 competition opened earlier this month at Forssa in Finland. Fabrizio started his defence of the title in good form having finished second to the home rider Janne Rantala of Finland in Round 1 and just four points separate the two riders entering Saturday’s meeting. Amongst the field at Leicester is Aidan Collins, the son of the former captain of the Leicester Lions, Les Collins. Aidan is the reigning British Flat Track Champion and a serious contender for a place on the rostrum.

Normal speedway admission prices apply and the first race gets underway at the usual time of 7.30 pm. This meeting is valid for season ticket members.
