Children came from the four winds for this weekend’s OSET Spring Cup (not that there was any wind, or rain, or snow for that matter). Dry conditions across the two days of trialling resulted in relaxed and fun riding for everyone.
With 15 OSET riders taking part in their first ever trial, Deepcliffe Farm on Harden Moor and Swaine Woods at Horsforth provided two completely different venues, giving the youngsters a real experience of the diversity of locations available to trials.
The sun was most definitely shining on six year old Jenson Jones from Leigh in Lancashire. He topped the podium on both days for the beginners E-Class route. He was delighted to take home a winners cap courtesy of Colin Appleyards from Saturday’s Deepcliffe Farm event and a trophy supplied by Trials UK at Swaine Woods on Sunday. Utterly comprehensive in his victories, he’ll be tough to beat at the final round and looks a sure bet to make it a hat trick of wins.
Trials UK rider Harry Hemingway (D-Class) and Colin Appleyard rider Myles Hutchinson (E-Class) looked unstoppable, unflappable and in a class of their own as they both enjoyed the top spot on the podium at the two events.
Perhaps the biggest rivalry will be between Owen Barnes and Jak Heaney who swopped first place on the D-Class intermediate level, ensuring it’s all to ride for at next week’s final round.
Another stand out ride came from Skipton lad Seth Gibson. The D-class rider has swopped his KTM for an OSET and came away the clear winner on the beginner’s route on both days.
Dave Horne, from OSET Bikes and responsible for organising the OSET Spring Cup series, said: “We have the right formula suitable for first timers right through to British Championship runners.
“After what’s felt like an interminable winter we were really lucky to have the weather on our side. The kids all had the chance to play with old friends and meet lots of new ones throughout the two days.”
With over 60 entries over the weekend, OSET Bikes are proving to be a great draw for introducing new riders to the sport. Supported by Bradford DMC and Horsforth DMC along with local OSET dealers means new and experienced riders get to enjoy fantastic venues with the added benefit of technical support on site.
The award the observers most enjoy presenting is the GRO rider of the day. Given to the stand out performance, Ryan Proctor from Lancashire and Brayden Cummings from Branston (yes, as in pickle) in Lincolnshire were thoroughly deserved winners, taking home a Global Racing Oil goody bag!
To help ensure kids feel part of something special and fun, everyone goes home with a little goody bag (and there’s always spare for supporting siblings!)
The SSDT charity bike attracted a lot of attention while it was on display at Swaine Woods. A special edition tartan inspired design, the OSET 16 bike secured more donations for The Forces Children’s Trust and Bike Tours for the Wounded.
To be in with a chance of winning this fantastic bike, all you need to do is make a donation either online by clicking the Virgin Money Giving logo or dropping cash into the donation buckets at the Trials UK shop or at the Scottish Six Day Trial in May. For every £1 donated you receive numbers with your name against them, so the more you donate, the more chances you will have of your name being picked from the hat following the SSDT Parade on Sunday 5th May.
The final round of the Spring Cup will be held on Sunday 28th April at Westwood. The South Yorkshire venue is located between Barnsley and Sheffield close to Junction 36 of the M1. Access is available off Storrs Lane. New OSET premier dealer, Splatshop who supports the first ever winner of the OSET Cup, Henry Stephenson will be on hand for any technical and riding advice. Full details can be found on the OSET Bikes event page.
Dave Horne finished: “We are delighted to be able to work with a number of trials clubs across Yorkshire to host a fun championship designed to get OSET riders together. As the previous two rounds, there will be three routes, easy, intermediate and hard, to cater for all levels of rider.
“We look forward to welcoming lots of new riders to come and join in the fun and have a go. As well as being part of a mini championship it is also running as a stand-alone event. If it is your first time riding come along with boots, long sleeves and a helmet and we’ll get you started.”
