Team Salop take victory at British Motocross Team Event

This weekend the ACU British Youth Motocross Team Event took place at Mallory Park on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st October. The track was in superb condition at the former Grand Prix circuit. This year’s team event was be hotly contested by 8 clubs; Salop MX, CJSC, Cumbria motocross, MCUI, NEMXC, Kensworth MX club, Norfolk & Suffolk MXC and the BSMA. Paul Malin was the commentator for the weekend and provided up to date information and team scores as each race and block of racing was finished.

The Adult open class was battled out between Team Ireland’s Michael Mahon and Stuarts Edmonds with James Hutchinson adding to the mix representing Cumbria motocross. Mahon took the overall with a consistent score card whilst Edmonds started his weekend poorly finishing down in tenth in race one only to come back and win the next three races. Hutchinson took his share of silver wear with two race wins and third overall. The final race of the weekend would decide the overall result. It was Luke Burton who got the hole shot only to be passed by Hutchinson who opened up an impressive lead and took the win over Mahon and the poor starting Edmonds. Burton and young Aaron Pipon followed up in fourth and fifth helping Salop MC keep their score down.

Dan Thornhill dominated the Youth class riding for Salop MC taking five race wins over the weekend ahead of Ashley Smith who himself rode impressively. Nathan Dixon and Jack Timms were both on the pace but couldn’t match the consistency of Thornhill and Smith.

BW85 class provided some of the best action over the weekend with close fought battles between Rob Yates and Henry Williams. Both riders took wins over the two days with Yates taking one win against Henry’s three. Josh Coleman also got a chance to go step of the podium but was ultimately not able to match the others consistent finishes. Williams eventually finished the weekend on 10 points and the overall beating Yates by 1 point.

The Small wheels class had a lot of different winners over the two days with Tom Hume, George Grigg Petit & Tom Grimshaw all getting top points. It was however, Petit that took the overall victory ending his weekend on an impressive 8 points. Grimshaw took second on 17 points fending off Jake Curtis riding for the BSMA team.

In the 65cc group it was Ben Clarke who took the overall win riding for Norfolk & Suffolk MXC ahead of James Hanscombe of the BSMA team. Rossi Beard was the stand out rider of the weekend, however, he wrapped up 40 points in race one which put him up against the odds for Sunday. After an off during his last race on Sunday he was out of contention. He still managed to take two wins but only scored enough for ninth overall and some aches after his off over the double.

Going into the final race of the weekend it was the BSMA team that led the team event until two DNFs plus a missing rider in the class demoted them to 2nd behind Team Salop who won the event. After the fourth blocks of races were completed there were four teams within 21 points at the top of the table. The overall winners of the event were Salop MC who had chosen their riders well. The BSMA followed up in second only a couple points behind.

The Auto team event was ran separately from the other classes and proved to be a great race. The Automatic team class was won by the Norfolk & Suffolk club who have some great riders coming through for the future and beat the BSMA team by just four points. Charlie Heyman took a full set of wins with a dominate performance in front of his nearest rival Harvey Cashmore. Charlie Colin’s took third overall 14 points of Cashmore.

The ACU would like to thank all the teams, riders, parents and supporters for helping to make it a great end to the 2012 season
