The Auto-Cycle Union recently contributed to the 2007 Conference of Institute of Public Rights of Way Management (IPROW) in Oxford.
The two-day conference, at St Hughes College, Oxford, is an annual event for IPROW members, the professional body that represents individuals involved in the management of public rights of way in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, principally as local government officers.
ACU Business Development Manager Dave Luscombe hosted three workshops at the conference, titled: Shared Access – Sustainable Environment: creating a solution to motorcycle access to the countryside.
During the workshops, Dave presented the nine new sets of Guidance notes to an assembled audience of Public Rights of Way professionals. These Guidance notes, created by the ACU’s new Land Use Advisory Service (LUAS), are now available to ACU Clubs via the ACU Web site www.acu.org.uk. They give clear and professional guidance to ACU Clubs wishing to organise competitive events that require use of Public Rights of Way. Through the Guidance notes, both Local Authority Rights of Way Officers and ACU Club Officials will be able to work from the same guidelines and ensure that permission for use is granted wherever possible.
“The Guidance notes were very well received, as was the whole issue of access to the countryside for properly organised and insured two wheeled motorsport,” said Luscombe.“ I believe that the future access to public rights of way for motorcycle sport will rely heavily on a far more positive engagement with Local Authority Rights of Way Officers. Through a positively framed approach to enlightened Officers, we are far better placed to create a sustainable future for our sport.” continued Luscombe.
