The weather played a part in Saturday’s race, starting to rain minutes before the riders were due out on slicks, requiring a rapid change of wheels.

The race proved to be an extremely thrilling affair with 3 riders battling for the win on the final lap Lawes taking 1st, George 2nd and wet weather specialist Richard Rowley 3rd, leaving 8 points between 1st and 2nd in the Championship.

Unfortunately the conditions didn’t help Jerzenbeck who on his first race at the circuit came home in 6th place. Sunday’s race was in completely different conditions, dry track and sunshine; welcomed I’m sure by Jerzenbeck.

During the early part of the 12 lap race Benny was dicing with both Mark’s, but unfortunately the pace proved to hot and he dropped back, leaving the Championship contenders to battle it out. Once George received the information from the Pit Wall that Benny was dropping back, he settled for a safe second place and the Championship, reversing the 2002 Championship standings.

(*) With the Supermono Championship having so few rules for the machinery used there is a wide variety of engines and frames competing. Within the overall Championship there are two classes, one for air-cooled engines, won by Mark Lawes on his 800cc Gallina, an engine derived from Suzuki’s DR Big trail bike.

The water-cooled Championship won by Mark George on a 610cc KTM engine derived from a modern motocross machine, housed in a frame based on a 125 GP bike.
