The quality of entry for this year’s Kenny Race clothing sponsored main solo race once again highlights the status of the beach race in the off road calendar. South African KTM factory motocross star Tyla Rattray, who took the overall victory at the recent GP of England on the Isle of Wight, heads the solo listings, but he will have to be at his best if he is to mount the top spot of the podium.
Former Enduro world champion Paul Edmondson will probably provide the stiffest opposition, while double British Enduro champion Wayne Braybrook, former beach race winner and British Supercross champion Mark Hucklebridge, and five times beach race winner Rob Meek will all be jostling amongst the frontrunners of the 600 strong field. Add in French ace Timotei Polisek, who has been second at Le Touquet two years running, and a strong contingent from America, Holland and Belgium and this year’s event will be a truly international affair.
Saturday’s Quad magazine sponsored quad race is one not to be missed. With top riders from America, France, Belgium and the UK this will arguably be the most competitive international event ever staged. Britain’s multi domestic champion Paul Winrow will face a tough afternoon as he aims for back to back wins after taking the 2004 race. French sand race experts Blaise Parent, Jerome Fournier and Vincent Pinchon come with a formidable reputation and boast a wealth of podium results at the Le Touquet beach race between them; and Dana Creech, the American Pro-ATV star, and H Bomb squad owner Wes Miller will want to maintain the honour of the stars and stripes. In conjunction with the quad race will be the sidecar class. No less than 50 of these three wheel machines will attack the hills and dunes with Paul Pelling returning to defend the title he won in 2004. Once again the youth riders also get their chance to tackle the Weston sand.
Over 160 young riders will be spread across the Cardiff Volkswagen sponosred 65cc, 85cc and quad classes which will be run as support races on both Saturday and Sunday. And as an addition to the event this year a new minibike race has been added to the schedule on Sunday afternoon.
Racing on the three-plus mile circuit starts at 10.15am on Saturday with the minibikes, followed by the three-hour race for sidecars and quads, and concluding with the 65cc and quad youth races. Sunday its solo machines only from 9.30am with big and small wheel 85cc youth racing followed by the big race of the day at 12noon.
The quad freestyle team will be providing their unique brand of entertainment on both days. To complete the weekend and ensure the whole family can enjoy this spectacular event the length of Weston front is taken up with a combination of trade stands and a funfair which will be open for the duration of the racing activities. An event campsite is being set up for Friday to Sunday with full refreshments and disco on site plus a shuttle bus to the beach all for £25 per van.
