Running a motorcycle sport event is a big commitment. Meetings don’t organise themselves, and they rely on experienced volunteers, trained officials and robust procedures. Clubs know this better than anyone. What is sometimes less visible, until it’s needed, is the level of support that sits behind an Auto-Cycle Union permit.
As the officially-recognised national governing body of motorcycle sport in the UK since 1903, the ACU’s support systems are built on more than a century’s worth of experience.
Clubs that organise with the ACU don’t just benefit from Health and Safety Executive-backed safety protocols and guidance, first-class training for officials, the best rider and officials insurance available in motorcycle sport, and administrative support that helps events run properly and professionally. They also benefit from the way the ACU responds if something goes wrong.
Although clubs take the appropriate steps to mitigate risk as much as possible, accidents do happen. As soon as a serious incident occurs, the ACU moves quickly and becomes directly involved.
Communications are handled from the earliest moments and expert guidance is provided to clubs and officials on the ground. In the longer term, legal support and counsel are provided if there is an inquest or court process. This all adds up to invaluable practical support during what can be the most difficult period a club will ever face.
Clare Humphreys, Secretary of GTSA Racing, experienced the ACU’s support first-hand in 2024 after a serious incident at a Grass Track meeting in Kent. Her club had organised many successful events, but nothing prepares a club for a major crisis.
“When our club experienced a serious incident, the level of support we received from the ACU was exceptional,” she explained. “From the immediate response through to the days, weeks and months that followed, we were supported by people with a wealth of knowledge and experience. All communication was handled with professionalism, clarity and care.”
Her experience reflects a structure that has been built over decades. The ACU’s discipline-specific departments work closely with clubs throughout the season, offering guidance, answering questions and helping organisers meet the required standards.
Behind that sits an administrative team and leadership with direct experience across all the disciplines. That knowledge makes a difference because support is practical, not theoretical.
“During what was an incredibly challenging and emotional time for the club, our officials and the wider sport, the ACU’s support made a significant difference,” Clare added. “Their guidance and presence helped us navigate the situation and made it far easier to cope with the circumstances.”
For clubs that already organise with the ACU, this support is part of the package that comes with every permit. For clubs that don’t, it is worth considering what sits behind the permit they currently use, and what support would be available if a serious incident occurred.
Most events thankfully pass without major incident. Organisers hope it stays that way. The real value of a permitting body is what happens when it doesn’t. That’s when experience, structure and proper support matter most.
That’s what gives organisers genuine peace of mind and confidence.
