Next generation supersport bikes eligible for MRO 600s from 2026

The British Motorcycle Racing Club has updated the regulations for its MRO 600 championship to allow the next generation of supersport machines to contest the series from 2026.

The changes align with broader shifts within supersport racing on a global scale, where new middleweight sportsbikes do not fall strictly within the categories that have governed the class for over a quarter of a century.

With a rear wheel horsepower limit of 130bhp, the club’s aim is to allow the next generation machines to compete, while maintaining parity with existing race bikes in the class. This ensures racers of current 600cc machines are not disadvantaged and can remain competitive with the package they currently have.

As a result, four-cylinder machines up to 636cc are eligible, such as the Honda CBR600RR, along with three-cylinder machines up to 900cc, such as Yamaha’s R9, and twins such as the KTM 990 RC R.

While used in other championships, machines that would need costly and complicated electronic restrictions - such as the Suzuki GSX-R750 and Ducati’s Panigale V2 (up to 2024 model year) - remain illegible.

Mike Domment, CEO of the British Motorcycle Racing Club, said, “This change ensures the club and the class remains contemporary and relevant. However, we also have to consider affordability and viability as part of these measures. Motorcycle racing is not a cheap hobby, but we aim to make it as fair and as affordable as possible. With that firmly in mind throughout this process, we feel the new regulations walk the line between opening up the class to more machinery, allowing a wider mix of makes and models on the grid, while not forcing existing riders to either buy more expensive models to remain competitive. A power cap is the easiest and fairest way to enforce these regulations.”

The first round of the British Motorcycle Racing Club’s 2026 season takes place at Brands Hatch on 13-15 March.
