ACU to introduce sport regions structure in 2027 as part of modernisation plan

After an 18-month review, the Auto-Cycle Union (ACU) will introduce a new regional structure for UK motorcycle sport from 2027, as part of a transitional plan to evolve from its long-standing Centre model.

The move to establish 13 sport regions follows an 18-month Board-led review of the existing Centre model. During this review, a working group made up of senior Centre Chairs considered the challenges around the recruitment of volunteer members, inconsistencies in approach, and a wide disparity in the distribution of clubs and events.

Originally established in the 1920s and expanded in 1951 to support post-war growth, ACU Centres have played a central role in the organisation’s operations for more than 70 years.

The revised structure for 2027 is intended to tackle many of the challenges faced in the modern era of motorcycle sport and sustain the long-term health and capability of the ACU regionally.

“The sporting landscape has changed, and so have the needs of our members,” Matthew Edwards-Wear, CEO of the ACU, explained. “This change is about creating a modern structure that supports the requirements of our organisers, members and volunteers, and the long-term health of the ACU as the national governing body of motorcycle sport.”

Transitioning to a new sport regions model will bring a host of benefits, including a consistent approach across the UK through common and simplified terms of reference and funding models that are targeted at supporting grass roots sport.  The new structure will also create opportunities for new members to get involved in the sport and the ACU at a local level.

Tim Lightfoot, ACU President, added: “This is a historic moment and only the third time in the 122-year history of the ACU that the regional structure has changed.  This is a clear statement that the ACU is evolving as part of its long-term commitment to ensure the continued success of British motorcycle sport.

“As the national governing body, the consolidated structure will bring consistency and efficiency in our support of clubs and our efforts to protect and develop motorcycle sport for future generations to enjoy.”

As part of the implementation process, a small project group will be established to work with Centres during the transition. Crucially, the ACU has taken great care to recognise the deep-rooted heritage of its Centres. The transition will aim to preserve and celebrate the unique local histories that have helped shape the organisation – even as it builds a more modern and resilient structure.

“The Board is looking forward to working closely with the Centres and other stakeholders so we can all contribute to writing the next chapter in the ACU’s long and distinguished story together,” Matthew Edwards-Wear said. “Further updates about this initiative will be communicated by the ACU in due course.”
