Team GB faced a challenging but promising start to the 2025 International Six Days Enduro (ISDE) in Seriate, Bergamo, as Day 1 brought difficult terrain, unpredictable weather, and high expectations.
Following a night of torrential rain and a damp morning, the course – featuring a loop of three tests (two cross tests and one enduro test), each repeated twice – quickly became tricky. The conditions made for a demanding opening day, especially for the Men’s Trophy Team, who were seeded 17th due to last year’s results. This meant starting around 70th, with many of the tests already deteriorating by the time the team arrived.
Despite the challenges, the Men’s Trophy Team rode with determination and consistency. Dan Mundell led the charge with a strong ride, finishing 31st in the Men’s Trophy category and 40th overall. Jack Edmondson followed closely in 32nd Trophy and 42nd overall, with Alex Walton in 36th and Harry Edmondson in 39th. Collectively, they pushed through the slippery tests and carved their way up to eighth overall in the Men’s Trophy standings – a solid foundation to build on for the rest of the week.
The Junior Trophy Team also delivered a gritty performance. Sam Hughes emerged as the fastest of the trio in 23rd Junior and 66th overall, with Sam Davies close behind in 24th and 69th respectively, and Callum Hughes rounding things out in 27th Junior and 85th overall. The juniors made up the most time in the cross tests, which suited their riding styles, and all three rode with maturity beyond their years to finish Day 1 in eighth place as a team. With the same loop ahead tomorrow, they’re eager to clean up any mistakes and come back stronger.
In the Women’s Trophy Team, Nieve Holmes delivered one of the standout performances of the day across all categories. A consistent ride throughout the tests was capped off by an exceptional final grass cross test, where she recorded the fourth-fastest time of all women. Her effort earned her sixth overall in the Women's individual standings. Katie Walker also saved her best for last, posting her top time in the final test of the day to finish 19th overall. Elizabeth Tett (Libby) rounded out the team in 21st.
However, both Katie and Libby were handed four-minute penalties for arriving late to pre-finish after losing time navigating back to the paddock. These penalties dropped the Women’s Trophy Team to fifth overall, but all eyes are still on a podium finish. Both riders are focused on recovering that ground tomorrow, now familiar with the loop and conditions.
Today’s tests were a true reflection of enduro – technical, unpredictable, and physically demanding. Team GB showed grit, focus, and team spirit across all categories. With five days of racing still to come, they’ll be heading into Day 2 with valuable experience under their belts and plenty of motivation to push further up the leaderboard.
