The British Championship weekend at Wood Walton saw some great action in both youth on Saturday and the adults on Sunday. The star of the weekend has to be Zach Wajtknecht who was successful and undefeated in taking the seniors on Saturday and the 250s in spectacular style on Sunday.
He showed what a talent he is, going through the card undefeated on Sunday and in doing so became the youngest ever British champion. In taking the title he beat ex-champions Adam Shipp and David Knowles who took second and third respectively.
In the 350cc there was some great action between Harland Cook, James Shames, defending Champ Matt Etherington, Georgie Wood and 2012 winner Andy Mellish. The unlucky James Shane's won every race except for one heat, dropping a chain, which put him second overall. Harland Cook rode a brilliant final - after a poor start he came from behind to finish third, enough to give him his first 350cc Championship, but his fifth overall. Third went to Matt Etherington who took second in the final.
In the 500cc Sidecars Simon Beard went so close to his first championship with passenger Ant Goodwin. They were unbeaten in all but one heat in which they had mechanical problems. Shaun Harvey went on to take his ninth title and his passenger Danny Hogg his eighth. After a very consistent day of racing Dave Carvill & Kai Noble took their first ever podium finishing third. Looking to have mechanical problems all day were both Nick Radley and Josh Goodwin. Hopefully they will have their sidecars sorted for this weekend’s European final at High Easter.
Despite having broken down on the way to the meeting and not getting to their digs until the early hours after an eleven hour journey, Martin Cuff & Colin Clark took another British title. Chasing defending Champ Will Penfold in the final, Cuff & Clark just beat Penfold & Ricky Pay by inches after Penfold became another to suffer mechanical problems on the last lap. Third overall went to Charlie Ridley & Harry McQuirke.
In the support classes Adam Filmer took the 500cc solos and Rob Wilson & Bradley Steer took the big chairs.
In the National Youth Championships on Saturday Max Perry won the Auto's from Hayden Wrathall and Ashton Vale. In the Cadets Kenzie Cossey took his first title from defending Champion Sam McGurk and Cameron Taylor took third.
There was some great action in the juniors between another defending his title, Harry McGurk, and World Champion Kyle Bickley. McGurk ultimately got the win with Jake Mulford completing the podium.
Henry Atkins and Joe Nicholls produced some scintillating action in the intermediates with the former taking the win from Nicholls. Jack Thomas took third.
The Seniors saw Zach Wajtknecht take his first title of the weekend with Tom Davis taking the runners up spot. Sam Bulley took third.
In the Mx classes Sam Stead completed a hat-trick of wins in the 85 seniors with Sam Woolley and Bailey Fellows second and third respectively. The 85 juniors was won by George Hopper from the only girl to podium this year Skye Adams. In the 65s George Hopper completed the double taking the win from Mickie Simpson with Harry McGurk getting another podium finish in third.
In the vintage support classes Steve Daw won the Uprights and Chris Mackett was successful in the Pre 75s.
