Guy Martin Retains Southern 100 Solo Championship

Guy Martin retained his Southern 100 Solo Championship title after a scintillating race long battle with Dean Harrison.

After nine heart-stopping laps, seven with Harrison in front by the merest of distances, at the chequered flag just 0.616 of a second stopped the young Yorkshireman from making a clean sweep of the 'big capacity' races at the Isle of Man Steam Company International Southern 100 Road Races, round 13 of the Duke Road Race Rankings Championship 2014.

Continuing on from his four race wins at the previous round of the rankings at his 'home venue', Oliver's Mount, Dean claimed no less than five race victories on the 4.25-mile Billown Course, setting four new lap records during the four day meeting, including a new absolute course record in the Solo Championship race at 114.601mph!

Dean was only headed home twice in seven races - by Guy Martin in the feature race and by fellow 'rising star' Ivan Lintin in the first Supertwin race.

It was no surprise that he was named 'Man of the Meeting' for the second year running.

Alistair Haworth achieved a double in the 400cc races, with newcomers Frank Gallagher and Mike Moulai taking the chequered flags in the 600cc B Race and the Senior Consolation race.

Dean Harrison has now moved on to the top of the Duke Rankings deposing Michael Dunlop who has headed the listings since the fourth round, the North West 200 in May.

Fellow Yorkshireman James Cowton who narrowly missed out on his maiden Southern 100 race victory, slots into third, up one place. Manxman Dan Kneen also moves up one to fourth, with Guy Martin improving two places to fifth as Ivan Lintin, who took his first race win at the Southern 100 moves into sixth position.

Highest climber, with consistent results during the event is Russ Mountford advancing some 58 places from 83rd to 25th!
