ACU/F.S.R.A. F2 Sidecar Championship Heads to Anglesey

Friday July 20, 2018 at 1:42pm
The fourth round of the ACU/FSRA British Formula two sidecar championship held with the host club Wirral 100 takes place at Anglesey on 28/29 July. There has been a lengthy break from round three which took place at Mallory Park over the weekend of the 6th/7th May. This was because of the start of the road race season for sidecars. There was one less road meeting with Scarborough being cancelled but there was still the TT and the Southern 100 in which many FSRA teams compete.

The coastal circuit of Anglesey was first visited by the FSRA in 2007 and has been used every year since. Its always a popular place to visit for racers, teams and photographers alike with stunning backdrops all around the circuit. I have heard mentioned that Anglesey is the UK`s version of Philip Island in Australia.

On to the championship and reigning champions Founds/Walmsley currently hold a thirty point lead . You would think they are dominating with wins, but the pair have only achieved two wins from six starts. This is because they have secured four second place finishes behind Crawford/Hardie who have four wins from six races but unfortunately have two DNF`s to their name. After the final race at Mallory where the pair started from the back of the grid in red hot conditions, they took a superb win which had four teams split by just two seconds. This has hampered the teams bright start to the season as just three points behind are Hegarty/Neave. Whilst the latter have achieved five podium finishes and a fourth place. There is a thirty three point gap to fourth in the table with the Lowther brothers reunited after the TT and S100 as Jake has been competing with 2015 British Championship winner Alan Founds. The next six teams are separated by just twenty points.

In the F2 Cup championship there is a tie currently with Remnant/Tilley and Gibson/Moore on 100 points, a remarkable achievement for the former as they have one win but have three podium placings and scored points in the other two. Newcomers to the championship Gibson/Moore have so far emulated Crawford/Hardie with four class wins but two DNF`s. Currently in third place in the F2 Cup some forty two points in arrears Lumley/Whitnell.

Like Mallory Park machine reliability will be paramount because this will be another weekend with a sixteen lap race on Saturday and the same again on Sunday and more so if the weather holds out to what we have currently had. The last two years has been hot one day and torrential rain the next.

The FSRA British F2 lap record for Anglesey was set some eight years ago by Neary/Chauhan with a time of 1:12.668.

For those at the circuit there will be live timing on the TSL Timing website.

On behalf of the FSRA I would like to pass on my congratulations to those that  had successful roads meetings and also heartfelt condolences to the solo competitors namely Adam Lyon, Dan Kneen, William Dunlop and just a couple of weeks ago James Cowton. Also wishing those competitors who are currently recovering from injury a speedy recovery, and hope to see you very soon.
