The next round of the 2011 ACU BYMX Championship is all set for Canada Heights on the 16th and 17th July. The fifth round of the championship hosted by ACU sees the championship return to the South after the opening four rounds of this year’s BYMX series had something of a Northern flavour with visits to Yorkshire, Scotland and Cumbria twice. The championship now moves south and setting up camp at one of the country’s most iconic circuits Canada Heights in Kent.
Following four rounds in the north of the country the Junior 65cc class is headed by Scotland’s Alexander Brown and Manxman Jed Etchells who were neck and neck over the opening three rounds but following his terrific four race winning performance at Dean Moor, Brown on the MotoOne KTM has now opened up a 10 point lead in the championship race. Etchells will no doubt be looking to close the gap on his favoured sand terrain and Ireland's Cailum Meara will be right up for the challenge too following his race win in Cumbria. Meara is currently fourth in the table just one point behind Twisted Seven's Harry Kimber.
Winning the last thirteen heat races on the spin Conrad Mewse from Somerset has taken a firm hold in his quest to be this year’s Small Wheel 85cc champion. Mewse has won three of the rounds thus far and currently enjoys a sixteen point advantage over second placed Jay Hague from County Durham. Jordan Eccles, ACU academy runner Sid Evans and Twisted Seven Kawasaki rider David Keet occupy positions three, four and five respectively and it's all to play for with just five points covering the three boys.
With Tom Neal unfortunately out injured and with Rob Davidson picking up a wrist injury in the opening race at Dean Moor that left good opportunities for others to score valuable points and for Liam Knight to secure his position as the championship pole-sitter. Knight on the Maverick Racing KTM finished second overall in Cumbria increased his point lead to a more than healthy 23 points. Brad Todd was the superb overall winner at round four winning three of the race wins and he now moves into second place behind Knight. Jack Gardner on the MX World Honda posted a solid weekend’s work last time out and he's in third place in the championship.
Fourteen year old Adam Sterry racing the super quick Evo Tech/RMJ Academy Honda scored a memorable overall win last time out in Cumbria taking three of the individual race wins. This season continues to build for young Sterry last year’s 85cc B/W champion and to his enormous credit he now sits third in the Youth Open class championship table. Jamie McCanney won his first BYMX race of the year in Cumbria and finished second overall with a typical gutsy hard charging two day display. Manxman McCanney also moved into second in the championship, following a weekend of misfortune for Ryan Houghton who dropped to fourth. Nathan Watson also had problems in Cumbria with a race one no score due to mechanical problems but then recovered his situation superbly taking the other race win and third overall. Watsons lead in the championship is now 14 points from McCanney with Sterry 22 points off the top spot. Jake Millward and Mark Perfect are in positions five and six with just three points separating them and both guys will be sizing up the chance to go fourth with a good performance in Kent.
Round five will also play host the fourth round of the Adult two stroke series on the Sunday where Luke Remmer leads the 125cc section and Stuart Edmunds on the TM heads the 250cc class. There are still a limited number of spaces left in all classes. Any riders wish enter the event should contact Nadine in the ACU Motocross Department on [email protected] and 01788 566422.
