The 2009 ACU Events British Solo Trials Championship got underway on Sunday 1st March at Low North Park at Harwood Dale, Scarborough with the overall win going to James Dabill on the 300 JST Gas Gas machine.
The competition this year is superb with Dougie Lampkin’s return and Michael Brown taking over the Graham Jarvis’s ride for MRS Sherco. On the opening lap Brown and Dabill took a joint lead with 15 points while Lampkin was just 3 points further back.
They were comfortably ahead of the next group of riders led by Shaun Morris and Alexz Wigg. After the second lap the top three of Dabill, Lampkin and Brown were on 15,18 and 15 respectively.
They all put in lower scores on the final lap to finish in that order with Morris fourth and Wigg fifth. The Expert A group was won by a very consistent Ian Austermuhle who just lost six marks which was exceptional.
Second was Sam Connor who was looking very competitive and third place went to Gary MacDonald. The new Expert B class was won by Ricky Wiggins who kept Sam Ludgate back in second with Guy Kendrew grabbing the final podium position. It was a hard day for the youth but 125cc mounted Jack Sheppard showed he is one to watch with a very respectable score of 49.
After an excellent opening to the 2009 ACU Events British Trials Championship at Scarborough the second round heads north of the border to Scotland for the Macdonald Trial at Kinlochleven.
Dougie Lampkin will be all out to take first place but he will face stiff competition from Dabill who looked completely at home on his new machine and his riding style should be well suited to Kinlochleven. Michael Brown will be keen also to go one better in the Championship after being runner up last year but this is going to be a hard series.
For spectators Kinlochleven is off the A82 is near to Ballahulish some 30 minutes south of Fort William. Practice is on Saturday 21st March between 16:00 – 18:00 and the trial starts Sunday 22nd March at 09:00 and there is plenty to see within easy walking distance of the road.
