The training of new racing talent in motorcycle road racing has just taken a giant leap forward with the launch of a new scheme by the National Governing Body of motorcycle sport in the UK, the Auto-Cycle Union (ACU).
For many years, ACU Registered commercial coaches who work in the off road disciplines of motocross, trials, enduro and grass track have been able to access the appropriate Public Liability and negligence cover. This has enabled the off road coaching sector to develop significantly, with a number of professional and properly qualified, approved, insured coaches able to offer youngsters and existing riders high quality, professional coaching with all of the safeguards that parents expect of a professional trainer.
The new deal from the ACU insurers Locktons will enable fully Certified ACU Registered Commercial Road Race Coaches to secure a similar insurance provision.
With appropriate insurance in place, these individuals will be able to advertise their services to road racers, and provide coaching on all aspects of the sport.
The deal marks a significant development within the sport says the ACU’s Head of Training Dave Luscombe,
“The off road sector has been well served by the ACU Coaching programme for a number of years, with over 20 fully Certified Registered Coaches working full time in the sector,” explained Luscombe
“Extending the provision of Industry leading insurance protection to potential Road Race coaches will, I believe, create a significant level of interest. It is our hope that over the next 12 months, the road race training sector will see a high level of growth in this area, providing high quality training to anyone who seeks it.” he continued.
Dawn Luby, Motor Sport Practice Manager for the ACU’s insurers Lockton Companies International Limited is similarly positive about the new deal, “Locktons are very supportive of the ACU’s programme of Coach development and see it as fundamental to creating a safe environment for motorcycle sport in all disciplines.” said Dawn,
“This new deal opens to door to former racers to become properly Certified under the ACU system and earn a living from providing a professional service to riders in the sport” she continued.
