ZAFFINO RAINS SUPREME!
Heavy rain showers - in July - meant just one full block of racing was completed at the NORA MX seventh round at Brakehill on Sunday before organisers had to halt the event on safety grounds.

Only the Masters and Clubman classes ran a second race in muddy conditions but with them struggling it was clear the youth groups would not be able to manage and proceedings were stopped.

However, as is often the case in the wet, some riders upset the formbook, and none more so than 17-year-old Marco Zaffino from Bewdley in the Clubman class. In the opening race he was 12th, but in muddy race two he kept rolling while others around him faltered to record a debut seven-second victory.

It was enough to secure third overall in the Group, as well as victory in the Clubman B group.

The opening Clubman race had followed the usual script with runaway championship leader, Dafydd Davies, taking a 25 second victory over Kyle Hawkes who overhauled Ryan Griffin in the closing stages.

Davies had led the second race in the early stages before a mistake allowed Zaffino and Griffin through, which is the order in which the finished.

In the Masters, Ed Davies, made no mistakes to win both races – the first by 34 from Gary Aldington and Darren Bridge.

In the second though, with conditions at their worst, he was 2m 49s ahead of the field. Chris Murphy was second with Matthew Kirk third, with Bridge’s fourth spot enough to secure him second overall in class, ahead of Rob Swann who posted a fifth and sixth.

Victory in the Clubman B group – his first – went to Simon Naylor thanks to a best-ever finish of fifth overall in the rain hit second race. That gave him victory in the B Group to add to his second earlier in the day. Andrew Willcock was second overall thanks to a fourth and second. Clive Cooper took third overall with a sixth and a third.

With only one race run in the Pro Group, it was on-form Luke Cooper who took victory by just one and half seconds from series leader, Carl Bunce. Cooper had set a sharp early pace and led comfortably, but towards the end Bunce, who had been battling with George Callaway until his machine popped a head gasket just after halfway, managed to reel him at the end.

Their battle put them 39 seconds ahead of Paul Winrow who rode alone for most of the race. However Bailey Edwards had to scrap through the pack to grab fourth after he got boxed in at the start.

A race long battle between Harry Walker and James Bevan ended with Walker securing fifth by just half a second.

Bevan’s efforts though were enough to secure him victory in the Pro B class, with Josh Waring second, 12 seconds behind and Lawrence Whyte third, a further four seconds back.

In the only 250 race Lorne Sinclair was rewarded for the long trip down from Oban with victory, heading his championship rival, Ayrton Knowles by almost four seconds at the flag. Their battle left them almost 30 seconds clear of the field, which was headed by Olly Martin.

Iestyn Rowlands was the first 250 Modified finisher in fourth spot, 13 seconds ahead of second place Modified man, William Booth.

Josh Birch, in ninth, headed the 150 class, while Daniel Hares in 12th was the first 250 Standard rider, with Scot Irons chasing him home.

In the sole 100 Group race, 150 Geared machines took the first seven places with Marcus Sprason once again grabbing the race by the scruff early on to stretch out a 20 second winning margin over Alfie Walker, who in turn was four seconds ahead of Robbie Wood.

In the 125 Raptor class Lewis Humphris had a comfortable win, while Aled Davies took the 100 Auto class and Jago Jackson the 50s.
