Danny McCanney & Tom Sagar Rule in the BSEC Mud

Danny McCanney and Tom Sagar shared Michelin Comp VI Elite class victory at rounds five and six of a wet and muddy Enduro21.com ACU British Sprint Enduro Championship, powered by Husqvarna Motorcycles at Chavenage Farm, Gloucestershire.

Following on from muddy conditions at the previous rounds of the series in Wales, the BSEC was once again hit with bad British weather resulting in rounds five and six at Chavenage Farm proving to be incredibly tough for all competing. Continual rain during round five ensured a difficult day for all as competitors battled their way around the cross-country course. Improved weather aided things for round six but the halfway point in the championship will be remembered as one for the hardest ever BSEC events.

Taking control of proceedings at round five, Beta’s Danny McCanney led the Michelin Comp VI class from the opening special test. Remaining relatively mistake free, McCanney picked up his third win of the series. Making his first appearance in the BSEC for 2014, Husqvarna’s Jamie McCanney quickly slotted himself in at the sharp end of the results. Pushing Danny hard, Jamie chased him home for second place. After a troubled start to his day, KTM’s Tom Sagar fought back to take third. Jamie Lewis (Husqvarna) took fourth with Daryl Bolter (KTM) completing the top five.

At round six Sagar turned the tables on the McCanney brothers and etched out an early lead after the first two special tests. Despite a late charge from Danny, Sagar had just enough in hand to secure his first victory of the series. Winning the final three tests of the day wasn’t enough for Danny to overhaul Sagar and he had to settle for second. Improving on his previous day’s result, Lewis capitalised on a crash by Jamie McCanney to take third. With McCanney fourth, Steve Holcombe (KTM) edged out Bolter for fifth.

In the Husqvarna Under 23 class a new winner emerged with KTM’s James Dent breaking through to secure his debut BSEC victory. Hampered by a costly mistake on lap two, championship leader Rob Johnson (Husqvarna) was unable to reel Dent in and placed as runner-up. Holding second for the majority of the day, TM’s Josh Gotts lost out to Johnson on the final special test and slipped back to third. Scotland’s Frazer Norrie (KTM) was fourth while Jonathan Rowlands (Beta) ended his day in fifth.

With confidence high Dent continued his winning ways and claimed his second win of the weekend at round six. Again Johnson placed second with Gotts taking the third step of the podium. Unable to close in on the leading trio, Norrie and Rowlands rounded out the top five.

Relishing the extremely slippery terrain, Husqvarna’s Lee Sealey powered his way to victory in the Motul Under 19 category at round five. Despite a strong start to his day, Joe Wootton (Husqvarna) ran into trouble on lap two and could fair no better than second. Off the pace of Sealey and Wootton, Brad Freeman (KTM) placed third. Charlie Frost (KTM) followed Freeman home to take fourth while Jon Hunt (Sherco) was fifth.

At round six Wootton again led from the off but this time remained mistake free to win from Sealey. With Freeman third, Frost and Hunt completed the top five.

Enjoying the largest winning margin at round five, Jack Staines (KTM) recorded a 13-minute win in the Enduro21.com 125 Youth class over Jordan Ridgway (Husqvarna) and Robbie Wallace (Yamaha). Getting the better of Staines at round six Ridgway picked up the pace to grab the win. With Staines second, Wallace finished third.

In the Amped Expert category round five belonged to Charlie Evans (KTM) with the Welshman beating Carl Jones (KTM) and Jamie Paget (Husqvarna) for the win. Putting in a strong ride Joe Chambers (Beta) held off Keelan Hancock (Husqvarna) for fourth. At round six it was Matt Ridgway (Husqvarna) who beat Evans to take the win. With Evans pushed back to second, Jones and Paget were third and fourth respectively while Carl Brogden (TM) improved to end his day in fifth.

Andrew Reeves (Beta) won both days of the Acerbis Expert Vet class from Mark Denslow (KTM) with Lee Cornish (KTM) in third.

Simon Trevaskis (KTM) led home the USWE Clubman Vet class at round five while Peter King (KTM) took the win at round six.

In the DEP Pipes Clubman category it was a double victory for Jamie Jenkins (Yamaha). At round five Jack Penhaligon (Husaberg) and Chris Pryce (KTM) were second and third while Hayden Millar (KTM) and Pryce completed the top three at round six.

Husqvarna’s Jane Daniels continued her domination of the TCX Women’s class with victory both days over Katie Walker (Husqvarna).

The Enduro21.com ACU British Sprint Enduro Championship, powered by Husqvarna Motorcycles continues with rounds seven and eight at Westwood, Sheffield on June 21/22.
