The ACU British ISDE Team made a strong start in day one of the 2013 International Six Days Enduro in Sardinia today. The much-favoured British Junior team (third then second in the last two ISDEs) have started well and are placed fourth – only 1:14-minutes behind the leaders, France, in what has been a close-fought day. The British Trophy team, who face a very hard task in competing against a welter of full-time professionals, are a strong sixth, just over 10 minutes behind the leaders – and that’s France again! ACU GB ISDE Team Manager, Dusty Martin: “We’ve made a strong start to the week. The conditions here are nothing like most of our riders ever see so it was important that they settle in and get familiar with the conditions. With such thick dust and rocky going we wanted to get them all home safely and be in a position to build on – and that’s exactly what’s been achieved.
“Jamie and Danny McCanney have ridden the whole season in the world enduro championship and are probably the only two in the team who see these conditions regularly – and you can tell, they’re fighting right at the very front of the Juniors setting top three times. So while the Junior team are in fourth, the gap to the lead really isn’t very much. The important thing over a week like this, in conditions like these, is to know when to attack, when to just get it home.
“The Trophy team were also excellent today. Again sixth might not seem so fantastic but the teams ahead are manned with full-time professional racers so for a happy band of part-timers (Jason Thomas excepting) this is a terrific performance. Our boys are very even matched too, I’m sure they’ll spur each other on.
“There’s a long way to go, the riders are settling in, so too are our support teams. We’re all really keen to get into Day Two!”
