With two rounds cancelled this season, the first which should have taken place at Frome, it is fitting that we should end the series where it should have begun! The Frome & District MCC have offered to host the fourth and final round of the SMCA British Clubman Sidecar Championship at the popular Asham Woods track on 4th August.
The current championship leaders are Nick Bowers and Pete Batt with Steve and Chris Pannell in second twenty one points behind. Asham Woods is Nick Bowers’ local track and this meeting will be his last at this venue as he has decided to hang up his boots. Before he does that however he will want to beat his closest rivals to go out on a high! The only fly in the ointment might be Paul Pelling and James Georges who had a hat trick of wins last time out at Lyng. Pelling and Georges didn’t ride at the first two rounds and so cannot overtake the top two but if they repeat their previous success will certainly be in the mix for a good placing overall. Third place team Arthur Walton and his passenger Faye Barnes are only one point ahead of Wayne Delves and Darren Elcocks and so there is all to race for to get a place on the podium by the finish.
More action is also envisaged for sidecar lovers with a big line of twinshocks including two teams from Europe. Twenty five outfits have entered and will be waiting for the gate to drop to thunder their way to the first corner. When the crowd read the programme and see that Shaun Mallows and Colin Dunkley are one of those teams entered along with Dietmar Schmio from Germany there should be anticipation of great racing ahead! When Rob Wilkinson/Mark Snell and Paul Morris are added to the field the outcome is far from assured!
For just £7 admission spectators not only get all that sidecar action but can also see Evo and junior solos. Practice is at 09.30 with racing expected to get underway at 10.30.
The track at Asham Woods can be found at Leighton, near Frome, BA11 4PN and can be found on the A361, Frome to Shepton Mallet road.
