CREWE AND SOUTH CHESHIRE – TONFANAU - REPORT

Thursday July 11, 2013 at 10:58am

Jamie Devine (Kawasaki 600) took a huge step towards winning the Crewe and South Cheshire club’s 450-1100cc Open championship for the first time after a hat trick of wins took his season’s tally of victories to eight from nine starts.

Reigning title holder, 51-year-old Martin Powell (Yamaha 1000) tried hard to beat his young rival.

He led all three eight-lap races in the early stages, but each time he could not hold off 24-year-old Devine.

Even then Powell could not take it easy, because Barry Evans (Yamaha 600) was there to challenge him strongly for second place and was less than a second behind Powell over the finishing line in the first two outings.

With just one round to go and only 30 points available, Powell, third in the standings, is 18 down on Devine and one behind Evans.

Steve Nugent’s lead in the 50cc Racing class is now up to 15 points after an eventful day.

Nugent rode his Minarelli to victory in race one, beating arch rival, John Lee (Minarelli) by over ten seconds.

A change to the carburation settings for race two did not work out well for Nugent and allowed Lee to catch and pass him, only to break down and gift his 64-year-old opponent an unexpected win.

Nugent switched to his Kreidler for race three, but holed a piston and retired.

Lee, now on his Derbi finished sixth, salvaging five points and giving himself a chance still of taking the title in the final round in August.

Just five points now cover the top three in the highly competitive Steel Frame class.

Michael Robinson tops the table on 60, after taking three fourth places in this meeting, two ahead of Dean Ephgrave, who took a win and two second places and five clear of Nick Jefferies, who had two wins and a second.

Caron Roberts (Yamaha TZ) has beaten her main rival, Huw Edwards (Rotax), eight times in nine races this season in the Forgotten Era Up to 250cc class, but that is still not enough for her to clinch the title yet.

The fast young lady from Halkyn, Flintshire, who will only admit to being “over 21”, claimed yet another hat trick of wins, but still only has a slender seven point lead.

Mike Carter (Honda) was in dominating form, as usual, in the 400 Supersport class, making it eight wins from nine races.

He now leads his closest rival, Nick Ward (Honda) by 18 points going into the final round in August.

Carter will not be racing then. Instead he will be competing in the F1 race at the Manx GP.

That is why the 48-year-old from Runcorn did not bother to go out on his trusty Honda in the Forgotten Era 251-500cc class, writing off his chances of winning that championship.

Instead Carter rode Ritchie Ellis’s Yamaha 0W01, the bike he will race in the Isle of Man, in the Forgotten Era over 500cc class, notching a third and two fourths.

Craig Hauxwell and his 16-year-old daughter, Kirsty are well on the way to clinching the club’s Sidecar championship after notching up another hat trick of victories.

The pair has won all nine races this season and have a maximum score of 90, 15 more than Chris Wade and Paul Hauxwell.

Dave Thorp’s hopes of winning the Classic 125 and 250 Single Cylinder championship took a hit after a broken throttle cable in his first race of the weekend.

Thorpe bounced back with two second places, behind hat trick winner, Dave Edwards, and goes into the final round on 78 points, six more than his closest rival, Steve Porter.
